The articles I’ve published in the past talk all about reaching the “First Degree” of witchcraft – but it’s very important for you to at least see the other 2 degrees.
The degrees are not “cast in stone” but they are things you should continually aspire to in your chosen path.
I’ve changed these a lot over time, while exploring my own Magick path.
Second Degree
To be able to set sacred space, cast a circle, call in the quarters, and set myself into my ritual space without having to look it up.
To collect and have available to me all the tools I feel the need to use for ritual.
Successfully cast 1 intermediate “love spell” to open the path for love in your life or someone elses. (If you already have love, you can cast one to reinforce the bond between you, or cast one for the love of a friend)
To write and perform my own new moon ritual.
To write and perform my own full moon ritual.
Successfully cast 1 intermediate “money spell” or “success spell”
To draw down the moon, God, or Goddess for ritual.
To complete at least ten hours of community service.
To complete a dedication ritual.
Sucessfully cast 1 intermediate “protection spell” to protect yourself, your loved ones, or even your home.
To keep a magickal journal for a full year.
To make an fill an inventory list of supplies needed for my work.
To pick a branch of my path where I would like to specialize.
To investigate the laws of my state and how they may or may not apply to my religion.
To investigate and learn more fully the history of my path.
To write three devotionals that I can incorporate into my path when applicable.
Third Degree
To live my life with random acts of kindness and service to others.
To become more proficient at a method of divination and apply it in the service of counseling others.
To design a method of how I would teach my craft to others who ask me to pass on my knowledge.
Successfully cast 1 advanced “love spell” to open the path for love in your life or someone elses. (If you already have love, you can cast one to reinforce the bond between you, or cast one for the love of a friend)
To celebrate all holidays in a manner appropriate to my path.
To write at least one “crossing over” ceremony for a soul in need.
Successfully cast 1 intermediate “money spell” or “success spell”
To write and perform my own rituals for each and every one of the Sabbats.
To write at least five meditations for use in my devotionals.
To find and connect with my totem animal or spirit and learn to work with them in ritual.
Sucessfully cast 1 advanced “protection spell” to protect yourself, your loved ones, or even your home.
To record at least twenty spells that I have performed with step-by-step instructions, lunar and astrological correspondences, etc.
To keep my temper in the face of negativity from others.
To perform at least thirty full rituals.
To reflect and put into words why I feel I am capable of honoring the title of a spiritual leader in my religion.
To be able to cast a magick circle on the fly without tools.
Don’t be overwhelmed by them. And don’t think you won’t be able to cast successful spells without completing them. You have the power to do Magick at this very moment.

Dr. Carlo Marcabienti an aging doctor who treats the peasents of a country village is visited by his son, Dr. Angelo Marcabienti, himself a doctor practicing at a city hospital. It is the dead of winter and a snow storm rages. Angelo, concerned for his aging father’s health, set’s out on a two mile walk to treat one of his father’s patients. The simple peasants do not trust the young doctor and refuse to let him treat their sick little girl until the elder doctor is in attendance. The son sends for his father, who is sleeping at home. When the elder doctor arrives the girl is successfully treated for diptheria. The elder doctor speaks not a single word as his son attends to the young patient. The young doctor makes his way home and engages his father in conversation about the patient. To his dismay, he learns that his father never left home to assist him and was sleeping the entire time. Angelo struggles to make sense of this strange occurrence. Carlo does not, however, question the inexplicable event. His simple faith and a lifetime of experience let him suspend reason. In time, Angelo leaves his city practice and joins his father’s practice attending to the simple village peasants. The role of Dr. Carlo Marcabienti is played by Boris Karloff. Green Witchcraft is one of the least documented Wiccan traditions, perhaps because its practitioners often also practice other main stream Wiccan Traditions or perhaps because most Wiccan practices are essentially Green by nature. Green Witchcraft is sometimes erroneously confused with Hedgecraft – perhaps because of the similarities that exist between these two traditions in their approach to the Craft.
Like Hedgecraft, Green Witchcraft incorporates the use of herbs in Magick and healing. Both also have a very practical and flexible attitude to practicing the Craft. They differ in that the Green Witch will rarely, if ever, be found worshipping within the confines of four walls, preferring the freedom and the closeness to Deity afforded by nature instead. It is not unusual for urban Green Witches to head out to a park or to the outskirts of a city – not only to worship – but also to re-establish touch with the divinity of nature.
Natural Master Herbalists
Cultivating herbs, vegetables, fruits and growing all sorts of flowers, trees and shrubs are quite usual for Green witches who are fortunate enough to have the required space at their disposal. Those who don’t have that luxury, still manage to hold their own by filling pots with lavender, sage, rosemary and basil on their balconies and in their windowsills. They generally also know where to obtain those they cannot grow in the wild. An inherent part of being a Green Witch is an affinity with plants and includes the ability to speak to them and being spoken to by them in return.
It is also the belief of many Green Witches that if you grow and care for your own herbs, the herbs will reward you:
* By lending more power to the spells in which they are used;
* By offering enhanced fragrance if added as an ingredient to incense;
* By being more efficacious in healing;
* By adding extra flavor to any meal.
The affinity with plants means that Green Witches intuitively know how to use herbs in ways different to those you would typically find in herbal textbooks and grimoires. They understand the lore and the uses: Emotional, mental, psychological, physical, ritual and magickal. The also know how to dry herbs, how to create potions, lotions, oils and brews and how different herbs can be used together harmoniously for making incense, for healing and for cooking.
When harvesting leaves, twigs and flowers from plants, Green Witches believe that permission has to be sought from the spirit of the plant first, that the plant has to be in perfect health, that no more than fifteen percent should be harvested at a time and that a gift needs to be offered in return to thank the spirit of the plant.

There are hundreds of deities in dozens of different Witchcraft belief systems. It is important to find the deities that resonate with the core of who you are, and ask for their help in your rituals and spells.
If you align yourself with the “right” deities for you, the power of your connection with Magick energy can increase beyond levels you can achieve on your own.
Getting the results you want (especially if you are asking for a lot) do not always come easy. But if you have the right deities on your side – miracles that you may not normally have the power to create, will be made easy because of your connection to your deities.
You typically want to select a few feminine deities to follow, and a few that are masculine. You want a balance. Of course if you follow the “Dianic” path, you will only celebrate feminine deities – and that is ok, as that is the path you have chosen.
I could write an entire book on this section alone, so I cannot go into the detail I need to in the scope of this book. In my Academy In-A-Box I have listed out deities from every branch, and many different cultures and belief systems. I also lay out a step by step process you can use to actually get the deities to choose you. This is a good way to remove all self-doubt that “you picked the wrong ones”.
Usually, selecting the right deities does not happen in 10 or 15 minutes. Sometimes it can take a day or longer – but you only really have to do it once.
If you want to use Magick at higher levels, it is important to have at least 2 deities that can help you and protect you on your path.
For now, do some research on this page on different deities you may choose to align yourself with. Read through the descriptions with a clear mind, and try to “feel” how you can connect with each diety. See if you can discover at least 2 that really “hit home” with you.
When you take the time to find the deities that are right for you, it will make all the difference in your path of Witchcraft. You’ll somehow feel more connected to everything you do, because the deities that you choose a lifelong relationship with will watch over you, helping you to bring miracles into your life through Magick energy.
