Clothing is an exclusively human phenomenon and can be found in all societies. The amount and type of clothing worn depends on factors such as functional considerations (i.e. protection from the elements) as well as social considerations. In addition, elaborate clothing has often been used as a sign of social status or wealth throughout history.

Clothing styles can also denote rank and positions of power. For example, in ancient Rome, only emperors were allowed to wear purple togas. Hence, clothing is often tied to concepts of fashion. Fashion is any mode of dressing or adornment that is popular among large numbers of people for a particular time or place. Fashion and clothing evolve constantly, with observable changes among different periods and generations.

Fashion in the modern world has been affected by dramatic shifts in human societies. Globalization and the increasing democratization of fashion has meant that more clothing choices are available than ever before. Fashion has become a mark of individualism, self-expression, and creativity. A woman can now wear referee top with a pair of skinny jeans. On the other hand, men can wear army jackets with t-shirts. 

In the modern world, the growth of individualism in fashion has sparked questions about human psychology. Many pop psychologists now tell people that you can spot tell-tale signs in clothing that reveal a person’s psychological health, character, and other traits. This may lead to stereotyping. A sloppy dresser is deemed depressed or unmotivated individual, while the businessman who wears a referee top is said to have a predilection for sports.

Other stereotypes have arisen among pop psychologists: the flashy dresser is screaming for attention and the person who is always garbed in head to toe designer gear is insecure. Meanwhile, the athletic dresser may be a woman perennially garbed in referee shirts for ladies or a man who wears sports jerseys in every occasion are both deemed obsessed with exercise or competitive sports.

I have often thought of how Freemasonry might look to the average person, from the outside looking in.

Freemasonry is, for the most part, a transparent organization. Ritual books are published in their entirety at major libraries and registered in numerous countries under copyright laws.

Between the media, the Internet and the fact you can literally walk in to a store, as a non-mason, purchase the “secrets” of our fraternity and I am surprised there is so many conspiracy theories still floating around.

This morning I was browsing one of my favourite masonic message forums and stumbled on a link to a Masonic news article published in 2005. The article is actually rather silly, however I did find one quote particularly amusing, it made me sit back and laugh.

“What if there is no big masonic secret? What if it’s just what men do when there are no women around to laugh: dress up, sit on thrones, invent rules. It seemed horribly plausible.”

I think that many people join today because they are more interested in the secrets, the hidden knowledge or the possibility that they are actually joining an organization bent on taking over the world. Since popular culture seems to have adopted Freemasonry as their latest fad there has been a drastic increase in the amount of young men knocking at the doors in search of the infamous and elusive “light.”

I don’t think anyone really knows exactly what Freemasonry is when they join. Lots of people know why they join and their reasons are vast. However I don’t honestly believe that people join Freemasonry with the purpose of finding that ancient noble order to help them become a better person.

There has been much talk about the standards of Freemasonry and how the exclusivity has disappeared over time in an attempt to keep those membership figures up. The truth is that the average age of Masons around the world is certainly at the higher end of the spectrum, but should that fact mean that anyone should be allowed entrance in to our fraternity?

As a reasonably new Freemason I get the impression that getting refused entry by ballot is almost unheard of. Surely if the investigating committee has done their task well, it should never come down to the ballot, but are the Brethren too scared now to cast that negative ballot in order to block someone they deem unworthy of entry?

I think that we need to sit back and look at our organization. Where are we right now? Where do we want to go with it?

Do we simply want a revolving door at our temples, or do we want Masons who will be a positive contribution to our order?

Receiving an invitation to the opening of art exhibitions at the prestigious Annandale Art Gallery, a converted Masonic hall, is a common occurrence for Bethany.

The stately building in Trafalgar Street was opened in the 1860′s as a Methodist Church. In the 1920′s it was converted to a Masonic Lodge. Now an up market art gallery in a trendy inner city suburb of Sydney, Australia. The owners have earned an enviable reputation the world over, regularly inviting Sydney society to attend the openings of their art exhibitions. They have gained their popularity by specializing in the best of Australian and overseas contemporary art.

The invitation, on the 22nd July, appeared to be exceptional from the start. It spoke of secret rare art, never before seen outside of the tiny remote tropical island, South Pacific archipelago, Vanuatu.

At the opening of the exhibition, a group of nine Ni-Vanuatu artists, dressed in full custom regalia, would perform a sacred and secret ceremonial dance from the remote island of Ambrym.

Bethany eagerly arranged with two friends to attend the opening, which sounded rather mysterious and lots of fun. Afterwards they would enjoy dinner at one of the fine restaurants of Darling Harbour. The problem of working their way through the Sydney traffic and finding parking for the Mercedes-Benz was averted with the firm decision to take a taxi, or be dropped off by one of the husbands.

“As we hurried toward the doorway of the gallery, the inviting sound of a string band playing Island music greeted us,” Bethany told me. “It seemed strange to hear the music of the South Seas in the middle of our winter. Made me think of taking that South Pacific cruise my husband and we have been promising ourselves. I can just see myself sitting under swaying palms beside a blue green tropical ocean,” she mused.

Sipping a glass of French champagne, Bethany and her friends joined the other guests buzzing with excitement, as they admired the beautifully carved wooden figures and masks, plus a four metre wooden drum. The upright tam-tam, one of the world’s largest free standing musical instruments.

“We understood the art to be very ancient and rare, yet it could mistake for any modern artwork,” the Gallery’s curator, David Baker said. “There is only one piece even close to it in a British museum.”

A barely clad figure stepped up to the tam-tam and began a steady methodical beat on the lip of the wooden gong’s face. A stylized face that had been carefully carved to represent an ancestor. The long slit up the front of the drum allowing the ancestor to speak once more.

Enticed by the ancestor’s call from the drum, four dancers appeared, dressed from head-to-toe, in what seemed to be a tent made of dried leaves. Their faces were covered with brightly painted wooden masks, topped with chicken feathers. They moved in a dream like trance. As they made their way to the center of the room, they chanted in monotone. In the middle of them danced five more men, in full secret society regalia. Stomping their feet, clapping their hands and chanting, they moved as one.

Shock registered on the Sydney matron’s faces as the five mature Ambrym men, dressed only with a wide bark belt slung low over their hips. A Namba penis sheath barely covering the essential part of manhood, as they concentrated on their sacred dance. A bright red hibiscus flower perched jauntily over one ear.

They appeared to be unaware of the sensation they were causing, as the gleaming well formed buttocks of the dancers jiggled up and down in time to the beat of their dance.

“I haven’t seen that much bare bottom since my four children were little,” laughed Bethany. “When the dancers first entered the room it was rather difficult to know where cast one’s eyes.”

To imagine these men dancing in the soft light of a tropical island forest, bare feet pounding out the ceremonial rhythm on a dirt floor, is one thing. But to think of them as having just come from a modern hotel room, braved the Australian winter, been driven through Sydney traffic, was something the mind had difficulty getting around.

“They’re taboo and no women are permitted to touch these men even today,” Bethany laughed. “In fact the dance was strictly ‘Men’s Business’. There was a time when any female who accidentally witnessed the dance, had to be killed. Just as well that doesn’t apply today.”

In a land of over 153 distinct cultures and languages, remote distances and few modern communication devices, life moves at a different pace in the tropical islands of Vanuatu, voted the Happiest Country on Earth in 2006. Dance and songs, carvings and sand drawings tell the stories of this ancient culture. Tradition being handed down orally from generation to generation. In many areas the villagers live as their ancestors did.

The Chiefs are beginning to recognize the educational needs of these remote islands. Many of the younger generation have lost the ability to understand the mystic language of the carved gongs. The chiefs made the decision to share the secrets of their society and released some of their sacred rare art, setting the art world on its ear. The aim being to inspire their young people and make them more aware of their ancient culture.

Few people are aware that the tiny South Pacific neighbor of Australia had such wonderful secrets tucked away, in the ‘Must See’ Travel Adventure Destination of the South Pacific.

This ancient society is slowly reaching out for the benefits of modern civilization. Children dream of becoming pilots, teachers, engineers. Yet many of the villagers live on under $ 1 per day. The inability to pay school fees, as there is no free education, has led to horrendous statistics in this tropical island paradise.

In 2007 the Vanuatu government admitted they did not have the finance to fill the educational needs of the nation. Education is not high on their list of priorities.

It was a Friday afternoon, and I was flying out of JFK in New York City. There was plenty of time before my flight, and it was still an entire day until my mother-in-law’s birthday celebration in Toronto on Saturday evening.

I watched with an increasing sense of “yuck” as my flight was delayed not one, not two but six times, until it was eventually canceled altogether.

The airport terminal was filled to the rafters, with every seat and inch of floor taken up by bodies and belongings.

People were arguing with airline staff, moaning and complaining all around me. A few years ago, I probably would have been doing some of the same. Even six months ago, this situation would have gotten me pretty “ticked off”.

But something has happened to me, since I joined the Secret Society of WHY. My dreams have been unfolding in their own way, in their own time, as long as I focus on WHY I want them and not HOW it will happen.

And, in the same way, I’ve been slowly able to accept that the rest of my life will also unfold just fine without my help. If I can accept each situation as it is, I’ll find golden opportunities for learning and growth along the way.

As someone living to learn and learning to live, this is right up my alley.

So, I wasn’t one of the people arguing, moaning or complaining. Instead, I kept in touch with my wife by phone, I wrote down everything I was learning in my journal, and I opened myself up to impromptu meetings of the Secret Society of WHY. And I had several of them.

These were encounters with people who, like me, chose to be present in the moment and open to how things were unfolding.

On Saturday morning, now at New York’s other airport LaGuardia, after a night at a questionable motel (the reception area was completely encased in bullet-proof glass), I recognized a few people from the evening before. We were all on stand-by for a flight to Cincinnati.

When the gate closed and it became clear we weren’t getting on, one girl burst into tears. Another person and I were watching from a distance, wanting to help but not quite sure how to approach her.

Eventually we both did, and the three of us sat and shared our stories. It turns out the girl’s sister was graduating from medical school in Columbus, Ohio, in just a few hours, and it looked like she would miss it.

And the other person? His best friend from childhood was getting married Saturday afternoon in Portland and he was the best man. Though he’d been trying, like me, to get out of New York City since Friday, he was now dangerously close to missing the event completely.

In those few moments that we came together, we comforted each other, made jokes and shared a real connection.

There were other stories; the woman I waited in line for 45 minutes with for a coffee, who offered to give me her own plane ticket to Detroit even though she was traveling with her family. “That’s ok,” she said, “I’ll catch up with them, you should be at your mother-in-law’s party.” I wouldn’t let her do it, but I was very touched that she offered.

And the simple kindness another solo traveler and I could show each other, by “saving” each other’s spots and watching our luggage when nature called.

Then, when I was on the last leg of my journey, I found myself lined up for a flight to Boston that would eventually get me home, thanks to my wife who had worked overtime on the phone and Internet to book it.

Everyone in the line-up made room for a man rushing to get to San Francisco. It wasn’t a life or death trip, but he’d had a lot of airline mishaps and was in an incredible hurry to make his plane. It seemed like common courtesy to step aside. But it could have easily gone differently.

When I finally got home, my wife told me she was amazed at how calm I stayed, and she was incredulous that I was taking notes the whole time.

But I’m glad I did, because now I can share the key things I learned from these impromptu meetings of the Secret Society of WHY. When you’re faced with things going differently than you planned, remember:

Stay calm, quiet and focused on the solution. Work together instead of reverting to anger or blame. And, this can be a challenge!
All situations are temporary, the good and the bad! I kept reminding myself, “You WILL get home. You are not going to have to live in this airport.”
Focus on the big picture. I imagined getting home and seeing my wife and her mother. I even laughed to myself, knowing what a great story would make at the dinner table for years to come. This was NOT a tragedy.
Showing kindness to a stranger you’ll never see again feels as good as doing the same for a loved one.

One final story, on my layover in Boston, I called my wife and the birthday dinner was just starting – I would just make it for the end. All of a sudden, a sappy 80′s song about lovers who couldn’t be together began playing over the speakers at the airport.

Tired and hungry as I was, I couldn’t stop laughing. What a reminder to keep things light and in perspective. “I’ll see you soon,” I said, and I did!
